Movie Summary: [Drama]

    Played with foxy charm and fiery energy, Oscar-winner Robert Duvall stars as Euliss "Sonny" F. Dewey, a Pentecostal preacher who embarks on a search for redemption after committing a crime in his hometown. Earnest about his preaching, Sonny's specialties are rousing his black churchgoers into a holy fury and reaching those in need of salvation. Clearly a man of his passions, Sonny's fall from grace comes when his wife leaves him for another man and his inability to control his temper leaves her lover dead. Even though he is faced with a career-ending crisis, Sonny rebounds by skipping town to try and start anew in a tiny Louisiana town. Baptizing himself the Apostle E.F., he sets forth on a new mission--to build a church for the community of Bayou Boutte. Still a wanted man, he is determined to open his own church and begin preaching again. With plenty of hard work, helping neighbors, avid believers, joyful preaching and the assistance of a local retired preacher, Sonny delivers his promise.
